Data Engineer, Microsoft Fabric & Azure

About the company
Our client is a healthcare focused investment business with a growing portfolio of companies across Australia and New Zealand. Their Data & AI team is small and hands on, led by an experienced Head of Data & AI who has already built the group's core data platform. You would be one of the first engineers in the team.
The role
You will onboard portfolio businesses onto a central Microsoft Fabric and Azure data platform. Each business runs its own practice management, clinical, finance and rostering systems, and your job is to connect them, model them and get each one live with reporting its leadership trusts.
This is a hands on build role with a consulting edge. You will spend real time with each company's CEO, CFO and operations leads, working out what they need and explaining the trade offs in plain English. The platform is AI agnostic, so you can use whichever AI coding tools suit the job.
What you'll do
  • Onboard portfolio businesses end to end, from scoping their source systems through to go live.
  • Build ingestion pipelines from APIs, databases and flat files into Fabric (Lakehouse, pipelines, notebooks) and Azure.
  • Write transformations in Python, PySpark and SQL following a medallion (bronze, silver, gold) design.
  • Turn one off builds into reusable templates so each new business onboards faster than the last.
  • Build Power BI semantic models and dashboards for portfolio leadership and the investment team.
  • Run requirements sessions with executives and keep them updated through delivery.
  • Keep code in Git with CI/CD, containerise where it helps, and test and document what you ship.
  • Use AI coding agents such as Codex or Claude Code to speed up delivery, and help shape how the team uses them.
  • Handle health and personal data carefully, following privacy and access control rules.
What you'll bring
  • 4+ years of hands on data engineering.
  • Production experience with Microsoft Fabric and the Azure data stack (Data Factory, Data Lake Storage, Azure SQL).
  • Strong SQL and Python, including PySpark.
  • Data modelling and Power BI semantic models.
  • Solid engineering habits: Git, pull requests, testing and CI/CD.
  • Experience bringing several source systems or businesses onto one platform.
  • Confidence working directly with senior business stakeholders.
  • Daily use of AI coding tools.
  • Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident, based in Sydney.
Nice to have
  • Healthcare data experience (practice management, clinical or rostering systems, health privacy).
  • Microsoft certifications such as DP-700 or DP-600.
  • dbt, Docker and infrastructure as code (Bicep or Terraform).
  • Databricks or Snowflake experience alongside Fabric.
  • Consulting, private equity or post acquisition integration experience.
Why join
  • $160K base + super + up to 20% bonus.
  • The platform already exists, so you scale and improve it rather than start from a blank page.
  • Real variety across a portfolio of healthcare businesses, each with different systems and problems.
  • A small team, an experienced leader and real ownership from day one.
  • Work that improves how healthcare businesses across Australia and New Zealand run.
